Fred Rogers, known to most of us as Mr. Rogers, spent his career trying to teach us about loving one’s neighbor as well as oneself. He had a deep desire to see people live in harmony and kindness towards one another. Deep down most of us harbor the desire and hope that our own Mount Hermon neighborhood would be just that kind of community.
Isn’t it interesting that in all the major faiths of the world (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism), all believe that we are called to care for our neighbor? Loving and being kind to those who are like us is the easy part, but in these writings, it calls us to see our neighbor as those who are not necessarily like us. With 25 new households/neighbors in our park, we might find not all of them are “like us.”
Mr. Rogers never expected the neighborhood to be like him, but pursued getting to know people just as they are. Which is not always an easy task. He was well aware that a good neighborhood didn’t just happen but was an outcome of many intentional choices to seek to understand his neighbors and preserve their dignity.
We, the Mount Hermon community Executive Board, want to create opportunities for us to intentionally care for our neighbors. That is why each meeting and event is so important to us. The bi-annual MEETINGS help us all to understand what is happening throughout our community and a simple way to meet some of the people who live on streets around us.
Our Summer FUN DAY is expanding this year as we will have a full free barbeque picnic. Mount Hermon Association will provide the food while some of our residents will help cook and serve. Besides the pool and field activities we are hoping to add some other delightful activities.
Our CHRISTMAS DINNER is an annual highlight with door prizes, silent auction, music, singing, and meal. It really is an event you don’t want to miss.
Taking care is one way to show your love. Another way is letting people take good care of you when you need it. Mr. Rogers
We are taking this to heart and are starting a new bi-yearly service which our neighbor Verjene is coordinating called resident “CLEAN-UP DAY.” The day will be working from 9 am to 1 pm serving up to 3 projects. Lunch will be provided by Mount Hermon Community. If you would like to be a part of the team, or know of a neighbor who needs help with some outdoor clean-up please contact Verjene at 831-246-2714.
